According to the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (Abpi), the national trade association for the industry, it employs around 75,000 people, of whom around 17,500 are graduates. For the financial year 2009-2010, its exports formed the largest chunk for any single industry, at around US$12 Billion. All this drug manufacturing needs not only manufacture of drugs, but also clinical research and testing of the same, even before they get to the manufacturing phase. The government regulation body, Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency ( MHRA), has strict standards with which a new drug must meet before it is allowed to be introduced to the market, or exported. Apart from the requirement by MHRA for clinical research doctors, independent Clinical Research Organisations (CROs) and Pharmaceutical companies too need clinical research doctors in their employment.

The work of a Clinical Research Doctor usually involves Phase-I to Phase-III of the clinical trial process. Salary depends on experience of the doctor and the the position within the company. A Clinical Research Doctor or Clinical Research Physician, as they are also known, will usually act as a team leader in a company setting. Many a times CROs prefer a Clinical Research Physician with experience as an Investigator or as an sub-investigator.

Many Universities and CROs offer positions as Clinical Research Fellow, which also involves working in a clinical trial setting. These positions are open to students under training as well as to fully qualified GMC Registered professionals. A Clinical Research Fellow usually starts at a salary of 31,000 GBP per year, with the expected working hours at around 40 per week.

Often, CROs employ Clinical Research Doctors under the job description or title of "Medical Advisor", a position that involves not only Clinical trials, but also providing medical advise, representing the CRO at biddings to win business for the company and acting as a consultant for the pharma company sponsoring the drug or the trial. The average salary for a Medical Advisor is around 100,000 GBP, and the range at which is offered is from 70,000-150,000 GBP per year, depending on experience and the CRO. The candidate can also expect a range of benefits as an employee. Many jobs require the candidate Doctor to have an specialization in the field the company has advertized the position for - for example its common to see an job advertisement for a Medical Advisor or Clinical Research Doctor with expetience in ophthalmic domain. Many European companies advertise for UK clinical doctors too for their job requirements.

These positions require a doctor to work independently, many a times acting as a senior consultant to the Pharmaceutical company and the CRO - positions which require prior experience as a Clinical Fellow and an Investigator or sub-Investigator. As mentioned previously, recent graduates can start off as Clinical Fellows and thereby gain experience in that position. Apart from universities, CROs also employ graduates as Clinical Fellows, a position from which they can start their career. Usually, recent graduates can expect a salary of around 30-35,000 GBP per year.

There are various online portals where jobs are advertized for Clinical Research Doctors; these can be searched for using keywords like - clinical research doctor, clinical research physician, medical advisor, clinical research fellow, research fellow, research fellow, team leader clinical trials.
