Victorian Gold Rush
The first popular gold rush of the
19th century, a century of prospecting and frontiersmen, was the
California gold rush, which started with the discovery of gold in Coloma,
California in 1848. Close on the heels of California gold rush came the
Australian version of the gold rush, the Victorian gold rush. Comparable to the
California gold rush in many metrics and the extent of its cultural and
economic influence, the Victorian gold rush started in 1851 with the
announcement of the discovery of gold in Victoria. Among the very first of
these discoveries in Victoria was made by a hut keeper at a location now known
as the Specimen Gully, near
Melbourne Soon enough, gold was
discovered in other locations, including in Ballarat and Bendigo. These
discoveries led to a gold rush, where more than 500,000 Australians, Europeans
and Chinese rushed to Victoria to stake their claim to a fortune built on gold.
The Victorian gold rush is also
known as the Australian gold rush because it was the first major gold rush of
Australia. A major find was first announced on 12 February, 1851, when
prospector Edward Hargraves claimed to have discovered a goldfield in Bathurst,
New South Wales. The New South Wales government awarded Edward Hargraves
$10,000 for this find. This finding of gold was soon surpassed by the size and
extent of gold mines discovered in the towns of Ballarat and Bendigo. Both
these towns are located within 150 km of Melbourne. With the discovery of gold
in these towns, the Victorian gold rush, or the Australian gold rush, had
started in earnest.
The Everglades
In the southern part of Florida is
found one of the most distinctive ecosystems in the world –the Everglades. The
Everglades is a subtropical wetland that is known for its marshlands and the
animals that live there. It has been designated as a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO. The US government has declared the southern 25% of the Everglades as
the Everglades National Park, which also hints at the importance of this
ecological region.
The most distinctive feature of the
Everglades is a type of grass called the sawgrass. This grass is nourished by
the water present in the marshlands and wetlands of the everglades. The region
where this grass grows is actually called the Glades or simply the “true
Everglades.” Submerged regions where sawgrass does not grow are mostly wet
prairies; these regions contain a larger diversity of plants and bushes. The
wet prairies contain a few inches of water for part of the year, and support
water plants.
How to Increase your Internet Speed
Having a slow internet can be a
productivity killer, whether you are at work or just chatting with a friend on
Facebook. One solution is to get the fastest connection you can afford.
However, even if you get a faster internet connection, it is oftentimes seen
that the internet connection slows down after some time. There can be many
reasons for such a slowdown of your connection, from the obvious to the more
technically arcane. When you want to increase your internet speed, you should follow
one or more of the following solutions.
Use a Faster DNS
A Domain Name Server (DNS) is a server
that allows your browser to lookup the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a
website using its human-readable name. Usually, an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
will designate a particular DNS for its customers. In many cases, this DNS may
work very slowly, which will slow down your internet connection. If indeed the
DNS of your ISP is slow, you should try using some alternatives, including the
free DNS service from Google at http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/.
An Introduction to investment banking
The financial crisis of 2008
brought the world of investment banking to the notice of the general public
once again. The world’s biggest Investment banks, such as Lehmann Brothers and
Goldman Sachs, were in news almost daily for more than a year. Mostly the news
about them was bad – for example, Lehmann Brothers declared bankruptcy and
closed despite herculean efforts to save it. Others survived, but not all of
them as investment banks. However, even when all these multi-Billion dollar
investment banks were in news, and it seemed as if civilization itself was in
jeopardy, not many knew or completely understood what was it that they did.
What is Investment Banking?
Investment banking refers to
services rendered by financial institutions, called investment banks, whereby
these banks help other entities, including private companies and governments,
raise money from the equity and bond market. For example, Facebook Inc was in
news recently because the company wants to raise money from the equity market.
To make an offer of its shares in the market, Facebook needs the services of an
investment bank to take care of all the legal and technical paperwork required
to make an Initial Public Offer (IPO). In exchange, the bank will take its fee
from Facebook, a fee that will likely run into tens of millions of
dollars.
